Wiksten Tank- Alterations (Help appreciated...)

I started cutting my Wiksten (PDF) Tank pieces and I suddenly realised that I would be fine around the bust. but not fine when bump starts to grow and eat into the length.

So, readers, this is what I have done to rectify this and I am just double checking that if; you were doing this alteration you would do it like this or what I can do to make this better!

So here is the front piece:

I slashed it and added 8.5cm.

Then aligned the grain-lines with my ruler. This ensured that the pieces with in alignment with each other still.

I then added more paper to the sides of the top and then using my long quilting ruler, I made the outside edge a straight line again by merging the top of the top and creating a new cut line- this extended the bottom of the top by 1.3cm. I do, in fact, think that this is a bonus as I will be expanding very soon around the waist. Now the bust section has stayed the same but the waist will now be increased by 2.6cm on the front....

.... and the same on the back.

I know that I muslin piece will show once and for all if I have done the right thing here, but let me know what you think, I would really, REALLY appreciate it!!

  1. That looks ok to me, and will definitely take into consideration the extra length and waist measurements you will need, but how can you be sure your bust won't grow?

    1. Good point, well made. I am usually a 30" chest and I have made the 'Small' which is a 34" so I **think* bust should be ok...

      Thank you!

  2. The majority of your bust growing will be in the first 3 months, according to majority of baby books as you breast develop milk duct/tubes things. Lol, love my technical wording. I went up 2 bra sizes and 4 cups sizes in the first 4 months, the only giveaway to some people, apart from my dreadful morning sickness.
I would suggest adding at least 2 cm to the bust line just in case. The extra length is great esp in the front, you maybe able to get away with a little shorter in the back, if you think it's too long. If the alterations don't work out, for your second version I would personally recommend adding a wedge starting underneath the bust and finishing at the hem, I found that useful with some tank tops, but I haven't tried this pattern before. Also if you want a copy of Burda's ruched maternity top let me know, and I'll email you my copy.

    1. Hi Kat, Thank you for your reply. I have actually gone from a 30" chest and I have made this as a 34" chest. As you said, time will tell and I don't mind hacking into this pattern a little bit more!

      Thank you!

  3. I would actually increase width and length in the front what you have and then if the back is loose enough now, you might just add a tiny bit of width but you'll be growing front and center, mostly, so in adding equal amounts to the back as well as the front will give you too baggy of a shirt in the back. Just a thought.

  4. Oh, and you're going to look so cute in these!

  5. That looks fine however; I'd add an inverted box pleat in at the centre front- looks super nice and would allow to increase both the bust and waist size but in a flattering way! Good luck xxx

  6. You may be able to get away with wearing the tank without any adjustments for a while. I got away with wearing my Grainline Tiny Pocket Tank(kinda similar to this pattern) until I was 6 months or so. And it still fits at the bust, I would just need to make it longer if I wanted to wear it now.

    Good luck!

  7. I saw the comments on the bust. Mine did not really go up until the last month... But by then I was so big nothing really fitted me - and all I go wear is jersey maternity tops . Could you make those in jersey too?

  8. I agree with threedresses, you'll grow more at the front than the back so you could probably get away with not adding so much to the back, but otherwise it all sounds good! I think really only time will tell (or strap a pillow to the belly of your dressmaking dummy!)
